Trans Fats and Your Brain
Just in case you need one more reason to avoid foods with trans fats (also known as "partially hydrogenated oils"), here's a good one: diets high in trans fats were associated with less cognitive function and smaller brain volume in a recent study.
Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University found that people who had diets high in trans fats were more likely to have brain shrinkage and score lower on thinking and memory tests, compared to those who consumed a diet low in trans fats and high in vitamins. Trans fats are often found in packaged foods, frozen foods and margarine spreads.
I sometimes get lazy with reading food labels, but this study is a great reminder for me to always give the ingredients list a quick skim. And, whenever possible, to choose whole foods instead of packaged or processed goods.
