Bee care in the winter
If your bee colonies are well prepared for the winter, then you can visit them only 1-2 times a month, without worrying about anything. How to prepare a favorite for wintering and protect the hive from rodents, we will tell in this article.
Preparing bees for winter
Incentive and preventive medical top dressings begin to be given immediately after pumping out the last honey. Feed your honey-fed workers, and together with top dressing give us medicines.
Growing a family means the power of the bee family is easy: in the fall, place a bribe in each nest by the end of the main bribe - this is the prey of bees collected in a hive of 2-3 frames partially occupied by honey with the best cells for bees. In them, the uterus will be able to lay eggs without fail. Resorting to such tricks, the beekeeper helps the uterus to think not about the offspring, but about the stern.
Bee care in the winter
During the winter period, it is important for the beekeeper to control and regularly check the humidity and ventilation in the hives, and also to rake out the dead in time (for those who are just starting a difficult job - beekeeping, under the dead - these are bodies of drones and bees that naturally ended their lives).
November-December are relatively calm months when the bees are quiet. Under normal weather conditions, without abrupt changes, you can check the wagon only once a month. In January it is better to visit families twice, in February the hive should be checked every 10 days. Awakening begins in March, so bees should be visited every 4-5 days. During this period, brood can begin, which means that twice more feed will be needed, respectively, and the temperature of the nest will rise. The beginning of spring is the most important period in the wintering of bees.
How to check the winte
- Noise. Going into a winter house, do not rush to go to the families. To begin with, listen to the hum, pay attention to the places where an even and quiet noise comes from - in these beehives the bees are happy with the wintering and everything is fine with them. If you hear a general increase in noise, check the temperature of the wintery - most likely it is raised. The quiet rustle of bees suggests that families are hungry.
The cause of noise under normal conditions can be padevy honey, which in the fall simply forgot to replace. In this case, it is urgent to give the bees a Candy cake - made from powdered sugar or sugar syrup cooked in snowy water.
- Humidity. Raw water will indicate a high level of moisture in the hives and poor ventilation.Because of the dampness, honey is oxidized, the walls of the beehive can become moldy, and the bees will begin to ache. To improve the hive microclimate helps poplar coal.
- Mice. If you find a litter in the margins and decapitated corpses of bees - be sure to put a poisoned bait for rodents in a zimnik.
Hives, the wood of which decays - the best place for living mice. Be worried that in such beehives bees do not live at all. Otherwise, the mouse will arrange a nest in them, and will disturb the bee colonies.
In winter, the bees need additional water. To do this, hang the bottle with water near the upper entrance. A plain wick is moistened, and then one end is inserted into the bottle and the other into the notch.
Help for a mattressless family
The family, which for the winter has remained without the uterus, behaves restlessly and noisily. If you do not have spare queens, it is better to take out such a family from the winter house so that it does not disturb other bee colonies. If you can give the family another uterus, do it quickly: without dismantling the nests, take it to the vestibule, put inside the nucleus with the uterus and bees. Wait until the family calms down, and only then bring it back to the winter hut.
Finally it is worth noting that the inspection of bee colony in winter is an extreme measure, and your actions should pursue a certain goal. Do not worry about the pet, and if you really need to inspect the hive, use only a flashlight with a red filter.
